General Communication Tips

ASL These tips will allow a person with hearing loss to effectively use what hearing they have and use visual cues to receive as much information as possible. This first set of tips is applicable to Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind people.

  • Choose a quiet area
  • Avoid standing in front of sources of light (windows, lamps)
  • Be sure you have the person's attention before beginning
  • Remember not to cover your mouth while speaking
  • Look directly at the person and maintain eye contact
  • Ask the person if they have special needs
  • Speak clearly, in your normal way, and avoid over-exaggerated speech
  • Check for comprehension by using open-ended questions (who, what, when, why, how?)
  • Try re-phrasing the question if at first it is not understood
  • Try using short, simple sentences
  • Do not shout, as it may give the impression of anger
  • Use body language and gestures to help convey your message
