Accommodations for Deaf and Deaf-Blind Employees

ASL

  • Fire alarm, telephone, machinery, and elevators being equipped with flashing lights
  • Assigning a "buddy" to assist the Deaf person during building evacuations
  • Providing a vibrating pager or TTY/TDD, Video phones (VP)
  • Use of text messaging and email for communication
  • Use of FM loops, video telephones, live captioning, or textphones
  • Providing interpreters and note-takers

Accommodations for Hard of Hearing Employees

ASL

  • Amplified phones
  • Induction loop: This system usually includes a microphone, an amplifier, and a coil of wire placed around a room. Sound enters the microphone and is amplified inside the wire coil, which can be picked up by the telecoil/T-switch in a person's hearing aid
  • FM Listening System: Usually this consists of a transmitter such as a microphone which then sends the sound via reserved FM frequency directly to the hearing aid.
  • Video phones (VP)
  • Use of text messaging for communication
  • Providing TTY/TDD, interpreters, and note-takers
  • Live captioning
  • Blackberry communications
